Current Mood: relieved
I think we have finally done it. We are now fully out of the apartment over in NJ and have turned in the keys. I took off today and Brian took a half day so we had time to go over and grab the last few items and give the place a good scrub down and vacuum so it will inspect well. I got to put this gooey white gunk in all the screw holes and such that we had put in the walls and doors to fill in the holes. I felt so butch! :)The apartment complex manager was in when we dropped off off the keys. I will miss her. She kissed us both goodbye. She loves us and never charged us the extra deposit and additional monthly rent she was supposed to when we got Victoria. About a month after we moved in I had stopped by the office for something and she asked me for advice on backing up the data on a computer there - I asked a few questions and discovered they were having a problem with certain things displaying oddly on the screen. and had called in their standard support guy who declared that it had to be a virus. He installed a new AV scanner - scanned it - and found nothing. He then told them it must be a new virus that nobody knows about yet (note: this computer is a stand alone PC that is not connected to the Internet and had not had a floppy inserted in it ever) and that the whole machine (it was about a year old) needed to be replaced since there was no way to clean this kind of virus. I asked her if she minded if I took a look at it. I did and it looked like the icon cache was just corrupt. I deleted the
cache and rebooted and it was fine again. (This is a not totally uncommon problem on machines that are left up for long periods of time and rarely rebooted.) I wrote down what I did for her so she could tell the repair guy and the complex owner so he could consider finding a new service provider. She was rather happy that they did not need to go through the cost or hassle of buying a new PC and migrating al their software and data over for a second time in a year. (I also wrote her a batch file to delete the cache herself if the problem ever recurred.)

So, Sue kissed us goodbye and promised to come visit. Brian was a bit shocked but he's not as used to being kissed by strange women as am I. On the way home we stopped by the post office and did our change of address things and then came home and unpacked. |
